What is a Banana Sapling?
A banana sapling is a sapling that will be planted to grow bananas at home or in a suitable environment. Banana likes moist and warm environments and is very picky about soil. The region where the most bananas are produced in the world and seen as the homeland of bananas is the South Asian countries. The hot and humid climate-loving banana is grown in Turkey in the southern coastal areas, especially in Mersin and Antalya. Although the banana is a warm climate fruit, it is grown during the winter months. Harvest continues from late autumn to early spring.

There are many types of banana that are consumed both as cooked and fresh fruit or traded as an ornamental plant, and the date of agricultural cultivation, which was made in Turkey for the purpose of eating banana fruit, was not recorded until the first years of the Republic.
However, in 1935 and 1938, the species brought from abroad by individual initiatives were planted and cultivated since then.
Bananas produced in the world; 41% are “Cavendish”, 14% are “GrosMichel”, 21% are “Plantain” groups and 24% are cooked banana groups. In the cultivation of bananas in our country, until the last 10 years, only the dwarf Cavendish (Dwarf Cavendish) banana clone was used in the garden facility, but today, the clone of “GrandNain” is also grown.
The names of some known banana species and the countries where they are grown are given below.
Australimus: It is cultivated from Australia to the Philippines. Eumusa: It is grown in South India, Japan and Samoa.
Rhodochlamusa: It is cultivated in the region from India to Indochina.
MusaParadisiace: It is cultivated in the sub-tropical regions of South Asia and India.
GrossMichel: It has a very important place in the world banana trade. Cavendish Group: Cultivated in Southern China and sub-tropical countries 7 also Williams and Grand Nainen are important varieties.
Cavendish (Giant, Dwarf and ExtraDwarf): It is grown in countries such as the Canary Islands and Australia.
Williams: It is cultivated as a species originating from South Africa.
Robusta: It is grown in countries such as Dominica, India, Samoa, Jamaica, Central America.
Mainly grown in Indonesia: PisangMass, Pisang Rastali and Pisang Rajah.
Lacatan: Cultivated in Malaysia, Porta Rico and West India.
Mysore: It is grown in India.
Silk: It is grown in countries such as West India, Philippines and Malaysia.
Pome: Cultivated in Australia, South India and Hawaii. PisangRaja: Cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia. Goldfinger: It is cultivated in Honduras, West Africa, Costa Rica and South Africa.
There are also species such as Valery, Ladyfinger, Awak, Nangka, Rastali, Berangan, Masve GrandNain.
Bananas, which are produced economically, can have various features in terms of physical properties. The tall breed, known as Williams, is 4 to 7 meters long and has a high body structure.
The Grand Nain species, known as medium height, is close to 4.5 meters tall. It is a preferred species because of its long finger structure and high resistance to plant diseases. The species known as the short Dwarf Cavendish, which has been grown in Turkey for years, is 3.5 meters. It is a high plant and the finger length of the fruit reaches 15-25 cm under quality growing conditions.
Banana species vary greatly in size, colour, smell and taste. The most consumed banana species in the world are Cavendish and Gross Micheldir, and for the last 1000 years, the most banana species are Musa Acuminata and Musa Balbisiana.
